Use Rit to dye the student overalls (Polyester blend)
You've started university. Congratulations!
Ahead of you are boring lectures, parties you don't remember and hangovers. One thing that will remember all the sittings and pub crawls is your student overalls, and of course it's important that they look as good as possible.
Finding the right fabric dye can be difficult, but we at Knapppålen have found that Rit Dye is the fabric dye that gives the best results and is absolutely the easiest to use at home.
The thing to keep in mind is that there are different types of dyes for different types of materials. If your overalls are made of more than 35% synthetic fibers (such as polyester) you should use Rit DyeMore . It is this type of overalls that we will dye in this guide.
(If it consists of less than 35% synthetic fibers, you should use our regular fabric dye, Rit All Purpose Dye .)
Here's how:
- To determine how much fabric dye you need, you can start by weighing the garment on a kitchen scale or estimate it yourself. A student overall usually weighs between 0.4 and 1 kilo. One bottle can dye up to just over 1 kilo of fabric.
- We recommend pre-washing the garment by hand in warm water with soap. This ensures that all parts of the garment are dyed.
- Cover your work surface with plastic or newspaper and have paper towels ready so you can wipe up any spills.
- Use rubber gloves to avoid getting paint on your hands but also to protect against the hot water.
- It is important that the water is over 90 degrees, almost boiling, throughout the entire process.
- Fill a stainless steel pot with water. It is very important that the garment can move freely when dyeing. We recommend using 22 liters of water per kilogram of fabric.
- Pour in a teaspoon of dishwashing detergent to get a more even distribution of the color.
- Put a lid on the saucepan and bring the water to just before boiling point (approximately 90 degrees)
- Shake the bottle of paint and pour it into the water when it starts to simmer.
- Start by wetting the overalls with plain water, then place them in the pot. Remember that the water must continue to simmer after you place the garment in.
- Stir the garment slowly and continuously to achieve even dyeing.
- The garment can be in the pot for between 10 minutes and 1 hour. If you are dyeing a polyester and cotton blend (as in this case), we recommend dyeing the garment for at least 30 minutes. Keep in mind that the garment will look darker when wet and then lighten to its true color when dry.
- When you have achieved the desired result, take out the overalls and squeeze them to remove any remaining paint.
- (Optional) We recommend using Rit ColorStay Fixative at this step to prevent the overalls from fading after repeated washings.
- Rinse the garment in water. Start with warm water and gradually move to cold. You are done when the water looks clear.
- Wash the overalls by hand in warm water with a gentle detergent, rinse and let dry.
Now you're all set and ready to rock the student parties! Greetings Jack at Knapppålen .
