Common problems when sewing a patchwork quilt – and how to solve them

Vanliga problem när man syr lapptäcke – och hur du löser dem

1. Why are my corners never exactly 90 degrees?

When corners aren't straight, it's almost always due to small errors that accumulate along the way. It could be that the seam allowance varies slightly, or that the pieces weren't cut perfectly accurately to begin with.

Even small differences become very noticeable when several pieces are sewn together. The solution is to be precise from the cutting stage and maintain the same seam allowance throughout the entire project.

2. Why does my quilt bubble after I've sewn it?

If the quilt becomes bubbly afterwards, it often means that the layers weren't held completely still during sewing.

It can also be due to not basting closely enough before quilting. Pins or safety pins at regular intervals help a lot.

3. Why don't my blocks match even though I've been careful?

This is common. Often it's not about one big error, but about small differences that add up.

If each block differs just slightly, it becomes noticeable when they are sewn together. Press the seams carefully and check the size of each block before you continue.

4. How do you get thick seams to lie flat?

When many seams meet, it easily becomes thick and uneven.

A good way to solve this is to press the seams in opposite directions so that they “lock into each other” instead of building up height in the same spot.

5. Why does the fabric pull crooked when I sew?

The fabric can pull crooked if you feed it unevenly through the machine or if the fabric is a bit unstable.

Let the machine feed the fabric itself as much as possible and avoid pulling on it while you sew.

6. How do you prevent the layers from shifting?

If the layers are not properly secured, they can slide apart during quilting.

The solution is to baste more often than you think is necessary. This can involve pins, clips, or temporary basting points across the entire surface.

7. Why does my patchwork quilt feel flat despite batting?

If the quilt feels flat, it might be because the quilting is too sparse.

The stitches need to be close enough for the batting to "lift" and provide structure.

8. How do you get straight quilting lines?

Straight lines are less about sewing perfectly and more about having something to follow.

Many people use the edge of the presser foot as a guide or draw faint lines before sewing.

9. Why do the colors look messy when I sew them together?

Fabrics that look good individually can clash when placed next to each other.

Always lay everything out before you sew. This way you'll quickly see if something feels too strong, weak, or unbalanced.

10. How do you avoid wavy edges?

Wavy edges are often due to the fabric stretching a bit during the process or being cut unevenly.

An even binding and careful trimming before the final step helps a lot.
