Quilting with a sewing machine is an easy way to get started with patchwork. You sew fabric pieces together to form a pattern and then build your quilt in several layers.
Here are the basics.
1. Cut the fabric pieces
Start by cutting out your fabric pieces in the shape you want, such as squares or strips.
Try to cut as accurately as possible. It will make it much easier when you sew the pieces together later.
2. Sew blocks together
Place two fabric pieces right sides together and sew them with a straight stitch on the sewing machine.
Continue to build up more parts and join them into blocks. When the blocks are finished, sew them together into a larger piece.
Press the seams as you go – it makes a big difference to the final result.
3. Build the quilt layers
Once the top is finished, it's time to layer the quilt:
- top fabric
- middle layer (batting)
- backing
Lay the layers flat and make sure nothing creases.
4. Pin or secure the layers
To prevent the layers from shifting when you sew, they need to be secured together.
You can use:
- pins
- safety pins
- temporary spray adhesive (for fabric)
The most important thing is that everything stays still when you start sewing.
5. Quilt with a sewing machine
Now you sew through all layers to hold the quilt together.
The easiest way is to start with straight lines, for example:
- along the seams
- in squares or stripes
Once you are more experienced, you can try more free-form patterns.
6. Finish the edges
When the quilting is complete, finish the edges with binding.
This frames the work and makes the quilt more durable.
