Learn how to sew on buttons the right way

Buttons coming loose is one of the most common problems with clothing. But it's actually very easy to fix yourself, and with the right technique, the button will last longer.

Prepare the tools

Have everything ready before you start. You will need a needle and thread , preferably a heavy thread that matches the fabric. At Knappnaalen you will find sewing thread and sewing needles .
Also have scissors or a hair clipper to clean up loose threads.

Remove the old button (if it is loose)

If the button is still attached but loose, cut the thread holding it and clear the fabric underneath. This will make it easier to re-sew the button and avoid lumpy results.

Sew the button on.

Place the button in the right place and start sewing small, tight stitches through the holes.
Keep the thread even and make sure the button is secure but not too tight, so that the fabric does not crease.

Finish work

Tie the thread securely at the back and cut off any excess thread.
Test that the button is in place by clicking it up and down a few times.

💡 Tip from Oscar: At Knappnaalen there are extra strong thread and sewing needles that make the work easier and more durable.
