How to mend your jeans – stylishly, easily and your way
Worn knees, a broken pocket or a rip in the back? Instead of throwing away your jeans – repair them. It's easy, fun and you get a garment that feels even more like your own.
You don't need to be a sewing pro. A little patience, some basic tools and the right attitude will go a long way.
What you need
- 🧵 Thread – denim, button or embroidery thread
- 🪡 Needles (for hand or sewing machine)
- ✂️ Scissors
- Piece of fabric – denim or other durable fabric
- 🔥 Textile glue or non-woven fabric (if you want to cheat a little)
- 💡 Plus: creativity, coffee and maybe a good podcast
We don't sell fabric – and that's a conscious choice.
There is already more than enough fabric in circulation. Use what you have.A repair looks better when it has a story.
- 👖 Cuts from old jeans you don't use anymore
- 🛍️ Pick up a pair second hand for 20 bucks and dissect
- 👕 Use fabric from shirts, jackets, curtains, anything
How do you do it?
- Cut a piece of paper that covers the hole with a small margin.
- Place the patch on the inside or outside – you decide the style.
- Attach with a few stitches, glue or pins.
- Sew on with hand stitches or a sewing machine – if you want it to be visible, use contrasting thread. If you want to hide it? Match the thread color.
- Sure! Or not – decorate further if you want.
Styles to try
- Sashiko Stitches: Simple, Even Rows – or Let It Spread Out a Little
- Frilly patches: Raw edge, coarse thread – let it be ruffly
- Contrast fabric: An unexpected fabric makes the whole look
- Personal: Embroider something, sew a button on, paint on top
Mending jeans isn't about restoring. It's about building on. A hole is just the beginning of something new.
And we have what you need to get started – everything except the fabric itself.
