Leather is a natural material that changes over time. Without the right amount of moisture and care, it can become dry, stiff and, in the worst case, crack. At the same time, over-care is just as common a problem as under-care. The question is therefore not just whether leather needs to be rehydrated, but how often .
The short answer
Most leather products do well with rehydration 2 to 4 times per year . How often depends on the type of leather, how it is used, and the environment it is in.
Factors that affect how often leather needs care
Type of leather
Different leather types have different needs.
-
Smooth, pigmented leather usually requires less maintenance
-
Aniline and vegetable tanned leather are more delicate and dry faster
-
Oiled leather should be cared for less often but with the right type of product.
The more open the surface of the leather, the more often it needs to be rehydrated.
How often it is used
Leather that is used daily, such as shoes, belts and bags, wears out and loses moisture faster than leather that is mostly stationary. Friction and movement cause the leather to gradually dry out.
Environment and climate
Dry indoor air, radiator heating and strong sunlight accelerate dehydration. During the winter months, the need for hydration may therefore be greater than during the summer.
Signs that leather needs rehydration
Leather that needs care often shows clear signals:
-
The surface feels rough or stiff
-
The leather loses elasticity
-
Small dry lines appear in curved areas
-
The color looks dull or lifeless
Don't wait until cracks appear. Once they appear, they cannot be repaired with care.
When do you moisturize too often?
Too much care can be harmful. Over-moisturized leather can become soft in the wrong way, attract dirt and in some cases start to lose color.
Signs of over-care include:
-
Sticky or greasy surface
-
Darker spots that don't even out
-
Leather that feels heavy or tight
It is better to use smaller amounts of care product more often than a lot at once.
The right type of product is crucial
Not all leather care products moisturize in the same way. For regular care, mild creams and balms that are suitable for colored smooth leather are usually sufficient. Oilier products and oils should be used sparingly and only where really needed.
