How often should you actually wash bed linen?

Bed linens often feel clean for a long time, but they are actually among the textiles that are exposed to the most dirt in everyday life. Yet many people wonder how often they really need to be washed. Is once in a while enough, or should you wash them more often than you think?

The answer depends on how the bedding is used – and by whom.

What collects in the bedding?

Every night, your body releases sweat, skin debris, and natural oils. Even if you shower before bed, these substances end up on your sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers. Over time, this can lead to:

• lingering odor
• less freshness
• increased risk of bacteria and mites

It is not always noticeable immediately, but affects both the feeling and hygiene.

Recommended washing frequency

For most people:

• sheets and pillowcases are washed every other week
• duvet covers are washed every two to three weeks

It is a good balance between hygiene and durability of the textiles.

When do you need to wash more often?

In some situations, it is good to wash bed linen more often, preferably every week:

• if you sweat a lot at night
• if you sleep naked
• for allergies or asthma

Temperature matters
