How to Transfer Embroidery Patterns to Fabric with Water-Soluble Transfer Paper

Så överför du broderimönster till tyg med vattenlösligt papper

Transferring an embroidery pattern onto fabric can be easy on light cotton fabrics, but much more challenging on dark, thick, or stretchy materials. A simple way to avoid drawing directly on the fabric is to use water-soluble embroidery transfer paper, such as DMC Magic Paper.

Here's how to do it.

1. Prepare Your Design

Start by drawing or printing your design onto the water-soluble paper. Make sure the design is the size you want for your embroidery.

Once you're happy with it, cut it out, leaving a small border around the design.

2. Attach the Design to the Fabric

Peel off the backing paper and place the design where you want to embroider.

The adhesive backing keeps the design securely in place while you work. If you're not happy with the placement, you can usually lift and reposition it before you start stitching.

3. Stitch Through the Paper

Place the fabric in an embroidery hoop if possible, then stitch directly through the transfer paper.

The printed design acts as a clear guide, making it easier to follow the lines, especially on fabrics where traditional marking methods are difficult to see.

On stretchy fabrics, the paper also helps stabilize the material while you stitch, reducing the risk of puckering.

4. Rinse Away the Paper

Once you've finished embroidering, rinse the fabric in cool or lukewarm water.

After a short time, the paper dissolves completely, leaving only your embroidery behind.

When Should You Use Water-Soluble Transfer Paper?

This method is especially useful for embroidering on:

  • Dark fabrics
  • Thick materials
  • Clothing
  • Bags
  • Caps
  • Stretch fabrics

Tips for the Best Results

  • Cut out the design with a small border around it.
  • Make sure the paper is firmly attached before you start stitching.
  • Use an embroidery hoop to keep the fabric taut.
  • Wait until the embroidery is finished before rinsing away the paper.

Water-soluble embroidery transfer paper is a simple tool that makes transferring patterns easier and provides a clear guide while you stitch. It's especially useful when working with fabrics that are difficult to mark directly.
